Small Change Big Impact
Climate Change and Oceans
Oceans are by far the largest water-bodies that we have on Earth and they are something that Mars once had! Oceans hold water of varying temperatures depending on where it is located.
FACTS
* Our oceans absorb 93% of the heat due to global warming
* About 70-90% of all coral reefs will disappear over the next 20 years
* Sea levels along United States coastlines will rise as much as one foot by 2050
Oceans and Climate Change
As the land becomes hotter faster , the water also stays hotter for a longer period of time. This is causing
-
The ice caps to melt and making our sea levels rise, which means we have less and less of land to live on.
-
More water and less salt is causing major disruption in marine life due to increase in Ph levels
-
As the co2 level in the atmosphere rises, more of CO2 is being absorbed in the ocean, causing coral reefs to die. Coral reefs protect the land from ocean currents and as they subside, more and more water is getting into our lands and we are unable to stop it.
-
As marine ecosystem becomes unbalanced, we are losing out !!
-
Last but not least, as the water temperatures change, the ocean currents are getting stronger and so we are experiencing a huge amount of natural disasters like hurricanes and unpredictable rainfall.
Algae Blooms in Warm Water
As the water temperature , the amount of algae increases, too. Though most algae is harmless to marine life, there are plants called algae bloom that are extremely dangerous to every living creature. The algae blooms release poisonous toxins that kills many animals. In 2019, the algae bloom toxins killed over 107 marine animals.
Coral Bleaching due to increase PH
Coral bleaching is a process coral goes through when the ocean water becomes too warm. When the water become too warm, the algae surrounding the coral was disintegrating. This leaves the coral exposed to viruses and disease that could harm it.
SEA LEVELS RISING
The sea level rising are caused by the melting of ice glaciers. Global warming has caused ice glaciers to melt making the water level rise. When the water rises it endangers the animals that use both the ocean and the water.
